Have you ever wanted to try Yoga but not known where to start? Maybe you’ve been following some online videos at home and now feel ready to take the next step. Or perhaps you’ve heard about the benefits of Yoga like improved flexibility, reduced stress and increased energy and vitality and would like some of that for yourself!
In this four-week, introduction to Yoga you will develop a solid understand of Yoga and the practice of mindful meditation. The course blends the traditional practices of Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga with modern approaches taken from the field of positive psychology. Each week you will be slowly introduced to new ideas, physical yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditations. We’ll practice them as a group so you can build your confidence and then you can practice them at home, between classes to refine your technique.
Week 1 – The Mind Body Connection
We will explore the connection between you body and mind, how tension in the mind can manifest in the body and vice versa. We’ll also introduce the key standing postures to build strength in your legs and end with a guided relaxation.
Week 2 – What is Mindfulness?
With the rise in popularity of mindfulness, we’ll look at what mindfulness is and what it is not. You’ll learn a simple mindful meditation technique and we’ll introduce the key seated postures and forward bends, building strength and flexibility in your upper body while being deeply relaxing. As always, we’ll end with a guided relaxation.
Week 3 – Yoga in Daily Life
During week 3 we’ll start by exploring the Yogic ideas that allow us to live a more peaceful, less anxious and more fulfilling life without the need to retreat to a cave in the Himalayas! We’ll also explore some simple Yogic breathing exercises and build on the physical postures of Week’s 1&2 to explore spinal twists.
Week 4 – Consolidation & Review
By now you will have learnt and practiced a range of postures, meditations and breathing exercises. This week we’ll explore how to incorporate them into your daily routine and complete a full spectrum practice including yoga postures, breathing and meditation. During this class we’ll also introduce simple inversions and end with a guided relaxation.
By the end of the course you will have:
- Improved your confidence and ability to practice physical yoga postures safely, so you can either attend public classes or practice at home.
- Learnt a range of techniques that you can practice to help reduce stress and live more peacefully.
- Improved your strength and flexibility.
- Made some new friends and joined a community of friendly Yogis!
